Did you know?

Did you know is the underlying question for the CommUNITY in Action newsletter. For example, Did you know that among American cities 20,000 and larger, Milledgeville ranks second in the nation for job losses over the past five years, 30.1%? This story was reported by the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.

We want to share good news and troubling news. We desire to create dialogue around opportunities to collaborate. GCSU students, faculty and staff can benefit from community knowledge that many of our readers have to share. On the other hand, a significant number of university courses lend themselves to students becoming engaged in "hands-on" learning and serving for the purpose of working with citizens to improve the quality of life in Baldwin County.

We welcome stories of approximately 300 words and photos are worth 1,000 words! We are open to innovative ideas and responsible appeals for cooperative projects.

Welcome to the CommUNITY in Action Newsletter

The Georgia College & State University American Democracy Project is participating in a national research endeavor designed to foster substantive partnerships among universities and community partners. Professors, students, and staff representing the four academic colleges and affiliated university offices desire to build on established community-university relationships and create meaningful dialogue leading to actions that improve the quality of life and economic health of Milledgeville, Baldwin County, and the central Georgia region.

The purpose of this electronic newsletter is to establish regular communication where all who care deeply about the region can share insights into particular community issues or effective approaches to addressing such issues. CommUNITY in Action also seeks to create opportunities for face-to-face dialogue. There is a natural tendency to want to "fix problems" in community life and sometimes we simply do not take the time to understand one another, become knowledgeable of community history and dynamics, and build relationships.

The CommUNITY in Action newsletter endeavor has no predetermined projects or agenda. We hope that by sharing information and coming together to discuss common concerns, good things will happen.

Initially, CommUNITY in Action is being sent to people whose email addresses are on community organization and university established lists. For those desiring to be added or deleted to the newsletter list please send a message to americandemocracyproject@gcsu.edu. We are also interested in gathering information that could be included in the newsletter. Please send article ideas to the same address.
