The Department of Mass Communication provides students with a versatile, engaged and marketable curriculum. A major in Mass Communication provides students with information and guidance to master the theory and practical applications of mass media in the industry.
Students will think critically and communicate accurately to diverse, global audiences, demonstrate knowledge of theoretical and historical foundations while applying legal, ethical and transparent principles to communication practices. They will evaluate the use of technology to communicate across platforms and apply technology tools to produce content. Students recognize the credible processes involved in research and think critically and communicate accurately to diverse, global audiences while applying legal, ethical and transparent principles to communication practices.
The curriculum covers the use of new technologies and functions that affect how journalism, public relations, advertising, broadcast television and radio, Internet and print media professionals work on a daily basis. Students are encouraged to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it to real-world situations such as working with non-profit organizations, campus events and local businesses.
Students begin with their coursework with Media Literacy, Professional Media Writing, Statistics and Mass Communication Theory and Research. Following these introductory courses, the major allows for students to pick and choose skills courses and electives that suit their desired field in Strategic Communications, Journalism or Digital Media Production. Students also must take Mass Media Law and Ethics, two on-campus practicums and two convergent media electives. In their senior year, students will take Senior Career Development, a Capstone course and an off-campus internship.
The Department of Mass Communication Research Laboratory is designed to simulate a living room environment. The lab is equipped with the latest in mobile eye-tracking technology, which is used by faculty and students to conduct studies on a variety of communication messages including advertisements, news broadcasts and video content. Students and faculty work together to design, conduct and write-up research studies for presentations at various conferences, as well as publication. Past work has been presented at the Georgia College annual undergraduate research conference, and the annual Georgia Communication Association conference. In addition, students who complete a research project are encouraged to submit their work to Georgia College’s undergraduate research journal, The Corinthian.
