MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Georgia College & State University baseball squad (18-16) rallied twice to tie the contest, but an unearned run gave Pfeiffer University (19-18) at 3-2 win in the bottom of the ninth today (March 26).
Both starting pitchers dealt masterfully, each working their way 7 1/3 innings, with Bobcat lefty
Clete Jessup (Darien, Ga.) allowing two runs and Falcon starter Adam Sedberry just one.
The Falcons scored first in the first, when Tyler Smith hit a two-out double and scored on Ryan Brown’s single. Both sides put up zeroes until the Bobcats tied it in the eighth.
GCSU centerfielder
Derek Johns (Waynesville, Ga.) led off with a single, and was bunted to second. After a
Chandler Snell (Loganville, Ga.) single moved him to third, Johns scored on another single by freshman
Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.). The Falcons went ahead 2-1 in the eighth on an RBI single by Shawn Coke.
Undaunted, the Bobcats knotted it up again when
Andrew Evans (Milledgeville, Ga.) singled home
Danny McCorkell (Wentzville, Mo.) who had been hit by a pitch. In the bottom half, Smith walked with one out and eventually scored on an error off the bat of Jodie Groce.
Falcon reliever Andrew Oliver (6-2) went 1 2/3 innings for the win, while
Shaun Monica (St. Louis) was the hard-luck loser, going one inning in the loss (2-3).
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, March 28 at 6 p.m., traveling to Lander University for the first of a three-game set.
