Advice to GCSU students: Explore and experiment with career choices while you're a student. It's much easier right now for you to "try on" careers. Explore every interest you have through internships, volunteer experiences, campus leadership roles, and networking with people in those fields. Most of all, major doesn't always equal career. Pick a major you love and with the right experience in college, you'll find a career you love as well.
Jennifer Cash, Assistant Director
A member of the Career Center staff since 2003, Jennifer Cash provides career advising for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. She also develops, implements, and presents student programming, and is the Career Peer Advisor Program Coordinator. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Communication from Mercer University. Prior to coming to GCSU, she served as the Re-Employment Unit Services Specialist at the Georgia Department of Labor.
Currently residing in Macon, GA, Jennifer is very involved in a variety of activities. Jennifer is an active member of the Georgia Association of Colleges & Employers and the Georgia Careers Consoritum. She is also a member of the GCSU Enrollment Management Customer Service Initiative Team. Jennfier is also an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
Her advice for students: Cook up some Career Success Stew
1 tsp of your major of choice
2 cups of experience (experience can be from internships, student
organizations, volunteering, or employment)
3 tbsp of interests
3 tbsp of work values
3 tbsp of skills
1 cup of networking
A fresh resume and cover letter (be sure it's error proof)
1 lb of interviewing skills
A dash of enthusiasm
A heaping dose of the Career Center
Simmer in a pot for 4 years (hopefully you're in school while it's cooking). After that time, take your Career Success Stew anywhere you want. No refrigeration required!
Michelle Berg, Internship Coordinator
Michelle joined the Career Center in August 2008 and works with students as they find and complete internships. In addition to working with academic paperwork, Michelle facilitates workshops and classroom presentations while also serving as a liaison between students, faculty, and employers during internships. Michelle also enjoys working with underclassmen as they explore majors and careers.
While completing her Master's degree and Education Specialist in Professional Counseling at Georgia State University, Michelle completed internships with the Career Centers at both Agnes Scott and Oglethorpe. She also served as a Graduate Assistant in New Student Programs at Georgia State. Michelle also has a B.A. in Psychology and minor in Music from Agnes Scott College, which would explain all of those Scottie dogs in her office!
Michelle has spent most of her life in the Atlanta area, but she also spent some of her childhood in Seoul, Korea. In her free time, Michelle enjoys using her creativity for craft projects, including cross-stitch, stamping, crochet, and especially beaded jewelry.
Advice to GCSU Students: "Find out what your passions are and get as much experience in those areas as you can. You can do a summer job, shadow a professional at work, attend a professional development program, conduct informational interviews with professionals in the field, complete an internship, or volunteer. If a career is not a good fit for you, you will discover it relatively quickly!"
