Current Group Offerings

Fall Semester, 2009

(Unless otherwise specified below, group meeting locations, dates, and times will be determined by members' schedules.)

ADD/ADHD group
Adults with ADD/ADHD often face challenges in college, work and relationships that overshadow their strengths, make it difficult to achieve their full potential, and impact their self-image.  This group will present strategies to help students manage symptoms of ADD/ADHD, improve mood and self-esteem, and provide opportunities to interact with others who have had similar experiences.  Contact Steve Wilson at (478) 445-5331 or steve.wilson@gcsu.edu

Chill Out Group
Counselor-led activities for grounding and centering mind, body, and spirit.  Self-affirmation, meditation, chakra work, and stretching.  Each week will be different.  October Wednesdays at 3 p.m.  The favorite activity of the group will be offered again December 2nd just before finals.  Contact Susan Hendley at (478) 445-5331 or susan.hendley@gcsu.edu.

Men's Group
A men's group creates a private space for men to talk about what they truly think, need, want, feel and what they are experiencing.   In an all-male group, men have the opportunity to form close relationships with other men and to realize that they are not alone with their problems, issues, and concerns.  Group therapy offers men a chance to bring up a concern and get honest and constructive feedback from a variety of perspectives. Group therapy also allows men to see how they present themselves in social interactions, and what personal and interpersonal issues emerge that can be generalized to other parts of their lives. Participating in a men's group will give you the opportunity to experience what men can learn from each other in a safe and supportive environment.  Contact Steve Wilson at (478) 445-5331 or steve.wilson@gcsu.edu.

Women of Color Group
This is a 6-week support group for students who self-identify as women of color.  It will provide an opportunity for participants to connect with others while discussing issues such as self-esteem, relationships, academics, stress management and other relevant topics in a safe and welcoming environment.  A commitment to weekly attendance is highly desired.  If you are interested in getting more information about this wonderful sisterhood experience, contact Dr. Phyllis Ivery at (478) 445-5331 or phyllis.ivery@gcsu.edu.

What is Group Therapy?  In group therapy, a small number of people meet with a trained mental health professional to talk about a common concern. However, in support groups such as AA and Al Anon, the members typically serve as the facilitators rather than a counselor.  Participants try out new ways of thinking and behaving and offer feedback to learn with and from each other.  Groups require honesty and commitment from their members, but the rewards include reduced feelings of isolation and significant improvement in quality of life.  Groups are confidential and meet in closed, private locations.  Group therapy has been a standard of treatment for many years and has been shown to be just as effective, or even more effective, than individual therapy.

Additional Groups may be offered at the request of students and/or organizations provided there is sufficient interest among the student body.  Past group offerings have included a GLBT Support Group, Relationships Group, Perfectionism Group, Working Mother's Support Group, Working Father's Support Group, Art Therapy, and a Social Anxiety Group.
