Outreach Calendar

Fall 2014

Career Counseling Group: Counseling Services offers career counseling/assessment groups to assist students in identifying majors and career paths that are a good fit for their interests and personalities.  Students who have completed the FOCUS-2 assessment and still have questions will benefit from this group.  The FOCUS-2 is a self-paced career guidance tool designed to help you explore your values, interests, personality, and skills as they relate to possible majors and careers.  The FOCUS-2 should answer many of the basic career questions, but these groups should address the students who need additional clarification.

Each group will consist of 3 sessions: an introductory group meeting, an individual appointment to take a different set of career tests, and a group follow up with career results.  The groups will be offered on the following dates:

Group 1

Group 2

Mindfulness Group: Mindfulness is a forward-thinking approach to stress management and the treatment of depression and anxiety. Over the course of an 8-week structured program, group members will learn awareness exercises and cognitive interventions designed to help them deal with symptoms of depression and anxiety and increase their feeling of control and direction in their daily lives. This group. led by Dr. Dixie Turner, has closed for the fall semester.  Students interested in this mindfulness group in the spring semester should call Counseling Services at 478-445-5331 email Dr. Dixie Turner at

Freedom from Smoking:  Georgia College offers Freedom from Smoking classes free to GC students. This seven-week smoking cessation program developed by the American Lung Association, is based on current addiction and behavior change models. The program follows a systematic approach to developing a plan of action and support for remaining smoke-free. Programs for students will be led by Counseling Services, while smoking cessation programs for staff will be offered through the Wellness Center. The courses that began in September and October have closed, but Counseling Services will offer additional courses for students in future semesters. For more information call Counseling Services at 478-455-5331.

Additional groups may be offered at the request of students and/or organizations provided there is sufficient interest among the student body.  Past group offerings have included a GLBT Support Group, Relationships Group, Perfectionism Group, Working Mother's Support Group, Working Father's Support Group, Art Therapy, ADHD Group, Social Anxiety Group and a Women of Color Support Group.
