The Three Year Program

Most students complete the MFA program in three years. Typically, students take 18 credit hours in the first year and 12 credit hours in the second and third years. Students take a variety of workshop, seminar, literature, and special topics classes in English. 

Sample Three-Year Schedule

The following schedule is only one possible sequence but offers a good sense of how one’s classes and thesis work might be completed. Classes highlighted in bold are pre-set for all students. Other classes vary for each student.

Students defend their thesis in the spring semester of their third year. 

Note: Students on assistantship must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester.
