Academic Opportunities

Creative Writing Courses: For the Creative Writing concentration, students complete an introductory course and two intermediate courses to understand the essential techniques and craft of creative writing in multiple genres. Students then take two genre specific, upper level workshops led by faculty writers in scriptwriting, fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry. Please see the undergraduate catalog for degree requirements and complete information about the English major/Creative Writing concentration.

For their Senior Capstone project, students may apply to work as mentors in the Early College program, a writing-in-the-schools opportunity in which undergraduates work with seventh graders under the supervision of MFA students. They may also apply for positions in a special journal-editing class which addresses editorial design and production issues related to print and digital publishing. Students may also fulfill the Senior Capstone requirement through an approved study abroad program, or they may take ENGL 4013 Poetry Translation or an approved IDST 4999 Senior Capstone course.

Collaborative Learning with MFA graduate students: Our program offers the unique opportunity to work not only with faculty writers but also with graduate students in our nationally distinguished Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Program. Graduate and undergraduate students develop strong mentoring relationships in both curricular and extracurricular activities.

Outstanding Majors: Each spring semester, our program selects one or two "Outstanding Majors." Also, in their senior years, students may be invited by the Creative Writing faculty to participate in Special Topics: Advanced Studies in Poetry or in graduate-level workshops as a possible option for the Senior Capstone requirement or for graduate credit.

Awards: Established in memory of Margaret Harvin Wilson, Class of 1934, the Margaret Harvin Wilson Writing Award is designed for students to explore new worlds. As a senior of then-Georgia State College for Women, Wilson won The Corinthian short story contest with "Sympathy Speaks." The $1,000 prize is awarded annually for original works of drama, poetry, or short story submitted by undergraduate students studying the arts, humanities, social sciences, and physical sciences at Georgia College.
