History of the Depot

  • The depot was originally constructed in 1853, burned by Union General William T. Sherman in 1864, and rebuilt in 1865.
  • In the 1920's the train that stopped at the depot was known as the "Beauty Special" and later the "Peach Special" in honor of the female passengers who were attending, what was then, Georgia State College for Women.
  • The depot was renovated into a student wellness center at a cost of $1.3 million. It opened its doors to student use on October 13, 2003.
  • The cardio room walls and loading doors remain much as they did during the operation of the facility as a train depot. Much of the graffiti is original to the depot.
  • The tracks adjacent to the depot are still used by the railroad.
  • To use the depot, participants are required to complete orientation materials and, upon doing so present their university approved I.D. at the door each time they visit.
  • Junior and senior exercise science majors will be performing a portion of their practicum in the depot. They will be assisting students who use the depot by demonstrating the proper use of equipment, answering fitness-related questions, and developing fitness programs to meet individual student's and faculty needs, to include weight training, cardio, nutrition, etc.
