Mission
The mission of the John H. Lounsbury College of Education continues the 120-year history of preparing educators for the region and nation. We develop reflective professionals informed by theory, research, and evidence-based practice. This mission is based on a strong belief in the value and critical importance of educators as Architects of Change in an open, democratic, and diverse society. (rev:1210)
Significant Partnerships
Our mission extends well beyond the certification and career development programs we offer our own students, to meaningful and significant partnerships with community schools, their districts, other academic institutions, and professional education agencies.
Accreditation
The John H. Lounsbury College of Education at Georgia College has been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) since July 2, 1955, a year after NCATE was founded. The college is also accredited by the Georgia Professional Standards Association (PSC). The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
National Wisniewski Award
The College of Education was awarded the 2008 Wisniewski Award by the Society of Professors of Education at the American Educational Research Association Conference. The purpose of the award is to recognize an institution that has made "singularly significant contributions to the theory and practice of teacher education."
National Christa McAuliffe Excellence in Teaching Award
The John H. Lounsbury College of Education was one of five finalists for the 2009 Christa McAuliffe Excellence in Teaching Award and one of four finalists for 2010. The award is in memory of Christa McAuliffe, the teacher who died in 1986 during the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. The honor is given to "innovative teacher education programs that can document the success of their graduates in improving P-12 learning outcomes."
Apply for an external scholarship
Academically motivated students are encouraged to seek external scholarships, fellowships, and grants to pursue their longer term academic and professional goals. Successful scholarship applications early in one's college career can be used to leverage future scholarship and other opportunities.
