Two Types of MAT Secondary Education Programs in MACON

1. Traditional MAT Secondary Education Program (Macon)

This program is for individuals who wish to finish the program in four semesters and who work 20 hours a week or less and can therefore devote 30-40 hours a week to their schooling.

2. Alternative MAT Secondary Education Program (Macon)
The alternative program is for students who must work while pursuing their degree. Students take classes 1-2 days per week instead of 3. Three courses may not sound like a lot, but it is a full time graduate load that requires 9 hours a week in the classroom and 18 hours a week outside. You shouldn't even consider taking on that kind of burden while working full time. This program is for students who must work full time or nearly full time, and you may do any one of the following:

  • Accept a full-time teaching position using a temporary teaching certificate if you can find a school that is willing to hire someone who is not fully certified. Note that schools are generally only willing to hire such individuals in very high shortage areas such as math and sometimes science or foreign language. It is rare for schools to hire uncertified teachers in other fields because there are enough certified applicants. Note that you must pass the Praxis II in your field before you can receive a temporary certificate.
  • Accept a position as a substitute or "long term" substitute teacher. This is a good option because it allows you to make some money and get some teaching experience at the same time. On the downside, the pay is rather low and substitute teaching is hard and thankless work. You can count 8 hours of substituting toward your 16 hours a week field placement hours in fall 1, but you would still need to spend one day a week working with a host teacher without pay. Still, that gives you four days a week to substitute full time. Sometimes our students work as substitutes their first year and then take a full time position their second year when they are almost fully certified and therefore more attractive to employers.
  • Work at a job outside of teaching but that has some flexibility. You'll need to be able to get to class by 4:30 all year round and in the fall you'll need to spend 16 hours a week in a classroom field placement (either two full days or four half days). In the spring you will need to complete a
  • FULLTIME, ten-week student teaching internship. Jobs that are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are ideal. Frequently our students work in regular jobs their first year and then take a full time position their second year when they are almost fully certified and therefore more attractive to employers.
