Planning a Career
in Forestry
The profession of forestry has as its primary function the active
management of forest lands and resources through the application
of sound economic and ecological principles. In forestry school
students may concentrate in forest management, fish and wildlife
biology, forest water resources or forestry science. Upon
graduation, employment with federal, state, or local agencies as
well as with private consulting firms, industry and conservation
organizations provides a variety of job experiences. Private
practice as forestry consultants and timber management specialists
is also possible. Job opportunities depend on the specific area
of concentration of the graduate and geographic focus of the job
search.
Undergraduate
Courses
The preprofessional curriculum for forestry students consists of
60 hours of study earned from an accredited undergraduate
institution. This can be accomplished in two to three years.
The remaining professional training leading to a Bachelor of
Science in Forest Resources must be completed at a school of
forest resources. The only school of this type in Georgia is
located at the University of Georgia. Requirements of other
professional schools may vary and students should consult the
preforestry adviser and admissions counselors from individual
schools for more information.
The preforestry curriculum offered at Georgia College has been
carefully planned and correlated to meet the University of
Georgia School of Forest Resources requirements. It provides the
strong liberal arts courses that develop critical thinking,
analytical and problem solving skills that are necessary for
successful performance in professional schools. We provide
numerous opportunities for students to interact with outstanding
teachers and academic advisers as well as with strong
preprofessional students. In this environment students can
develop their potential and become competitive professional
school applicants
