As an integral part of the Liberal Arts mission, Georgia College seeks to enrich classroom learning through field experiences, internships and coaching and mentoring opportunities. To that end, the Department of Government and Sociology provides numerous internship opportunities for its students across its various academic programs which include Criminal Justice, Sociology, Public Administration and Political Science. Clif Wilkinson, Lecturer and Internship Coordinator, is currently working on further developing the internship program for Political Science and Public Administration majors.
Over the years, students participated in the prestigious Carl Vinson Institute of Government Legislative Internship Program (CVIOG) at the University of Georgia. In addition to general placements, this internship program allows for a GC student to serve as a CVIOG Legislative Intern. These positions are awarded based on the quality of the student applications.
Additional internship opportunities are available at the Robins Air Force Base. Recently, a student participated as an intern within the 461st Air Control Wing of the U.S. Defense Department. Working with the Commander and the Executive Officer of the Commander, the intern assisted in the production of new Public Service Announcements for the Team JSTARS (Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System).
Other internship options include Georgia College’s Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) and opportunities with local government agencies such as the Putnam County Planning and Zoning Department and the City of Macon.
According to Professor Wilkinson, “There are ample internship opportunities available for students, although it is a competitive environment. Employers are looking for interns with an excellent academic record who possess leadership skills, have exemplary written and verbal communication skills and are passionate about service to the community.”
