Cayla McMichael, Class of 2012
B.A., Sociology
M.Ed. student at University of Georgia

What are you currently doing?

I am currently pursuing a M.Ed. at University of Georgia in Professional School Counseling. As part of my program, I am interning at South Jackson Elementary School in Athens, Georgia as a School Counselor in training.

How did your college program prepare you for your graduate work?

My sociology degree helped prepare me to be a school counselor because I understand that all students hold different privileges and challenges in life based on the numerous identities that they hold. School counselors need to understand this concept because some students will need more of my assistance than others will. This is the equality versus equity conversation. In order for students to have the same amount of support in their school, I have to be equitable in the amount of support and attention they receive.

What are your future plans?

I will graduate from my program in May 2014 and starting in August 2013, I will have a year long internship in a high school in Gwinnett County as a school counselor.

What are a couple of your favorite memories of your time at Georgia College?

I have many favorite memories associated with Georgia College, but my favorite memories are associated with the friends I have made and the people I have met. During my time at Georgia College, I have met a lot of impressive, caring and authentic friends and professors. I realize that it is hard to find a lot of these qualities in people outside of my college experience and really cherish the relationships I created there.
