An Overview of the Department of Government and Sociology

Integrative Character
The fundamental mission of the Department of Government and Sociology is to promote critical reflection and the advancement of knowledge by its faculty and students. The faculty are dedicated to the integrative character of the liberal arts and to the primary role played by the social science disciplines within the liberal arts.

Active Citizenship
The various programs of the department share a focus on challenging students to analyze their roles as active citizens and prospective public servants in a democratic society and the international community.

Prepared for Life
Your professors will strive to teach students to think critically, to understand the philosophical and scientific foundations of the social science disciplines, to be able to communicate their understandings, and to be prepared for life and work in a rapidly changing world.

Pre-Law
We also offer a pre-law program. There is no pre-law major per se, nor is there one particular course of study that leads to law school. While most undergraduate students who are thinking about attending law school are majoring in political science, criminal justice, or another social science, law schools accept good students with practically any undergraduate degree, from astronomy to zoology. The department has advisors who can offer detailed information and advice about preparing for law school. Moreover, within the political science major, the department offers a legal studies concentration that many have found to be a very useful preparation for law school or for obtaining positions in legal settings.
