High Achievers Facilitating/Participating in Summer Camp Activities
Counselors-In-Training Program
Since October 1, 2008, the High Achievers have been participating in a Counselor-in-Training Program that has included “experts” training the High Achievers to design, coordinate, and facilitate a youth camp program for elementary school-aged students. The training includes learning activities that will be replicated in the arts, recreation, and academics. The High Achievers participate in a year-long leadership and skill-based training to ensure that they were effective peer leaders. Keenly aware that we are part of a global society, all activities have a global focus.
Summer Camp is a 6-7week long experience that includes icebreakers, art, music, dance, culture, and physical education all globally themed. Its coordinated and led by the High Achievers and operates for 4 days a week.
Activities include a peer-led leadership program in which the High Achievers receive year-long training to be camp counselors to younger youth. Within this leadership program, they will be trained by experts, focus on becoming leaders, and learn interdisciplinary activities that enable them to teach in the areas of art, academics and recreation, which will allow them to foster a global awareness goal so that students are engaged in inquiry about the world, themselves and other in order to broaden perspectives, promote cultural awareness and appreciate global connections.
All participants receive nutritional and substantial snacks and lunch during the summer. In addition to USDA snacks and the free summer food program, cash funding will support this effort. We have several local vendors who partner with the High Achievers Program either to provide food free of charge or at a discounted cost.
