Overview

Benefits
There are many benefits to studying abroad for a semester or academic year. The long-term experience provides sufficient time to immerse yourself in the culture, and perhaps learn another language.

Considerations
Studying abroad in the junior or senior year is a great way for students to earn credits in their major or minor or to explore other upper-level elective courses. In general, students must have earned a minimum of 60 credit hours and have a minimum institutional GPA of 2.75. GPA, faculty references and personal essays are considered for acceptance. Students have the option study in Spanish, French German or other foreign languages and many host universities offer courses in English. Students register and receive credit for Georgia College courses while on exchange.

Financial Aid
Financial aid and scholarships assist many students with their study abroad plans. Contact the Financial Aid Office for information on the HOPE Scholarship, Pell grant and Stafford loans, and the International Education Center for information on study abroad scholarships.

Applications
Every program will have different application requirements and application fees. Please meet with a study abroad adviser before you begin the application process for any program.

Assistance
The International Education Center can help you research options and find the right program. Furthermore, the International Education Center can assist with pre-departure preparations and provide an orientation, which includes program itinerary, packing guidelines, course content, cross-cultural communication skills and other important information. Our staff help coordinate the overseas experience and serve as a point of contact while you are away. The host university's exchange coordinator provides in-country orientation, helps with registration and housing and generally assists with the transition. Some programs offer more support to students and others will require students to be more independent.

Deadlines
Unless otherwise arranged, the deadline for Fall semester partner university exchanges is February 1, and the deadline for Spring semester partner university exchanges is September 1. Other programs will have different deadlines.

Plan Ahead
You should begin the application process at the International Education Center at least nine months before you plan to begin the exchange. Please contact our study abroad adviser, Liz Havey liz.havey@gcsu.edu, before you make any arrangements.
