 Keywords



A keyword is an important term related to your topic. The tools that you will use to find information on your topic, such as the library catalog, databases and the internet, all use keywords to provide you with information resources.

 

Selecting keywords is a no-brainer. Often you can pull the keywords from within your research question, as shown below:

"Has global warming caused an increase in the number of hurricanes in the world?

Research tools that you will use to locate information resources often work differently. The terminology that tools such as the library catalog, online databases and the internet use varies widely. That's why it's a good idea to expand the keyword list by identifying related terms. Often this can be as simple as listing synonyms for the keywords that you've already identified.

The following example illustrates the process of identifying related keywords:
