Endnote Tutorial
Introduction to Endnote
Endnote is a bibliographic software program that allows you to format and organize bibliographic references for research projects. You can use Endnote in conjunction with Microsoft Word to automatically format and insert references into your research paper in a selected style (such as MLA or APA).
The GCSU Library offers Endnote to the GCSU community via the 36 public computers located in the Reference Area on the 2nd floor of the Library and Instructional Technology Center.
This brief introduction will show you how to:
- Create an Endnote Library
- Import records from the GCSU Library catalog into Endnote
- Export citations from databases into Endnote
- Enter citation information manually into Endnote
- Use Endnote with Microsoft Word
- Edit a citation
- Access additional Endnote resources
Create an Endnote Library
Endnote allows you to store your references in files called libraries. It's recommended that you keep all the citations for a project in one library.
To create a library, follow these steps.
Open Endnote. Select "Create a new Endnote Library."
Click "OK."
Name your library and select a location in which to save it.

Endnote will then create and open your new library.

Select the format for your bibliography.

You are now ready to begin importing citations into Endnote.
Importing Records
from the GCSU Library Catalog into Endnote
Let's say you find the following book in the GCSU Library catalog and want to import the information into Endnote.

Go to the Endnote Tools menu, select "Online Search," and then select the Georgia College Library catalog.

You will then see a search screen for the Georgia College & State University Library catalog. Type in the appropriate information in the search boxes and click search.

In the "Confirm Online Search" box, click OK to retrieve your references.

Click on "Copy Selected to" and select your library.

The record will be sent to your library.

Exporting Citations from Databases into Endnote
Many databases provided by GALILEO or the GCSU Library allow you to export citations directly into Endnote. The process varies according to the database. This example uses Academic Search Complete.
When you locate a suitable article, click on the export tab.

Select the option "Direct Export to EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager."
Click Save.

The Endnote program will open automatically. Select the library to which you wish to save the citation and click "Open." The citation will be imported directly into your library.

If you are searching a database that does not allow direct exportation into Endnote you can simply type the information into Endnote.
From the References menu, select "New Reference."

From the "Reference Type" menu, choose the appropriate format for the reference (journal article, book, etc.)

Type the information into the appropriate fields.

Close the "New Reference" window and the record will automatically be inserted into your Endnote library.

Using Endnote with Microsoft Word
Use the Endnote toolbar in Microsoft Word to insert references from your Endnote library into your paper. This is known as the Cite While You Write feature. There are several ways to insert Endnote records.
Method 1
While in Microsoft Word, click on the "Insert Citation" tab in the Endnote toolbar. Use the "Find Citation" feature to search for entries in your Endnote libraries.

Locate your record using the search box, select the record, and click "Insert."

The reference is then automatically inserted into the document, as in the example below.

Method 2
When you are ready to insert a reference into your Word document, open Endnote and select the reference in your Endnote library.

Return to your Microsoft Word document. Use the "Insert Selected Citation(s)" feature to insert the record into your Word document.

The reference will be automatically inserted into your paper.

To edit a citation, click on "Edit Citation(s)" icon in the Endnote toolbar.

The "Endnote Edit Citation" dialogue box will appear. This box will allow you to edit the author and/or year, add text before or after the citation, and add cited pages to your citation.

The complete Endnote manual is located on the public computers in the Reference Area of the Library.
