Reference Sources The Reference Collection, located on the second floor of the GCSU Library, is often the best place to start your research. Books in the Reference Collection can help you become more familiar with your topic and assist you with identifying keywords and important people. Bibliographies can help you identify specific articles and books.
Encyclopedias and Dictionaries:
The Children's Literature Dictionary : Definitions, Resources, and Learning Activities (Ref. PN 1008.5.L38 2002). A reference book of over 325 terms related to children's literature. It also offers creative ideas for teacher lesson plans.
The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature. (Ref. PN1008.5 .C37 1984)
A reference guide to English and American books for children and young adults. It contains information about authors and illustrators, as well as famous characters from cartoons, films, radio broadcasts, and television programs that are relevant to young people.
Biographical Information:
100 most popular picture book authors and illustrators (electronic resource: PS 490 .M395 2000). Provides information about the most popular authors and illustrators of children's picture books. Photographs and biographies of authors and illustrators are provided.
Bibliographies, Catalogs, and Recommendations
The Cambridge Guide to Children's Books in English (Ref. PR990.C36 2001). Lists books for children and young adults, written in English, which have significantly influenced readers. It includes information about authors and illustrators and a brief history of each book, describing the impact the book has had on readers.
The Neal-Schuman Guide to Recommended Children's Books and Media for Use with Every Elementary Subject (Z1037.M2865 2002). A guide to the best resources for elementary teachers and librarians in every subject. Lists and briefly describes useful books and provides helpful teaching tips.
Informational Picture Books for Children (electronic resource: Z1037.A1 C54 2000). A resource for teachers, parents, and librarians who are searching for quality books for children. It contains descriptions of over 250 picture books.
Middle and Junior High School Library Catalog (Ref. Z1037.J854 2000) Lists fiction and nonfiction books suitable for young adults in grades five through nine.
The Horn Book Guide (Ref. Z1037.H67 2005) Includes critical observations of hardcover books for children and youth.
Children's Catalog (Ref. Z1037.C5443 2001) Lists works of fiction and nonfiction from books, magazines and web sites for children from preschool to the sixth grade. It also includes information about professional resources for librarians.
Awards:
Coretta Scott King Awards (Ref. Z1037.A2 C67 2004) Lists award-winning books for children and youth, by and about African-Americans. It includes brief descriptions of the books, updated biographies, and photographs of awardees. Also included are sample illustrations from the award-winning books.
Newbery and Caldecott Awards: A Guide to the Medal and Honor Books (Ref. Z1037.A2 N474 2005) A guide to more than eight decades of award-winning books. It also includes essays about children and adolescent literature and a brief summary of each book.
Newbery and Caldecott Medal and Honor Books in Other Media (Ref. PN1009.A1 S4 1992). Lists media, such as films and audio books, adapted from books that have received the Newbery and Caldecott Award. The list begins with media from 1991 and extends as far back as 1922, the year the Newbery (1922) and Caldecott (1938) award was born.
Newbery and Caldecott Medalists and Honor Book Winners (Ref. PN 1009. A1.N653 1992). Lists the books and their authors who have received the Newbery or Caldecott award. It also includes background information about each book.

Children's Literature
Here are entered collections of works published for children, including literary works, nonliterary works, or both. Works on books for children considered as physical objects are entered under Children's books. Works on the reading interests of children or books recommended for children, are entered under Children--Books and reading.
Collections of literary works or individual literary works written by children under 15 years of age are entered under Children's writings.
Works on child authors and/or discussions of their works are entered under Child authors.
Search also Juvenile literature as a subdivision, e.g. Astronomy--Juvenile literature as well as Young adult literature and Young adult fiction
Articles Databases
Most databases index articles from journals, newspapers, and magazines. Some databases offer full text articles, while others contain only citations. Some databases are subject specific, while others are more general in coverage. Some databases relevant to the field of Children's and Adolescent Literature are:
Academic Search Premier
is a multidisciplinary database that contains articles from academic journals and magazines in the humanities, the social sciences, and the general sciences.
ERICDatabase covering education and educational research, with both abstracts of published and unpublished sources on thousands of educational topics. 1966 to the present. From 1996 to present, the library has a subscription to the online set of accompanying documents. For earlier years, our library has the accompanying microfiche set of documents. For most records with an ED number, we should have the full-text either online or on microfiche. For records with an EJ number, use the journal locator to determine if we have access to the journal.

Full-text database of journal articles and pamphlets especially for professional educators that includes: abstract and index coverage for 435 professional development titles and searchable full text for nearly 440 journals covering the most current topics in the field of education. 1984 to the present. NOTE: Most of the journals in the Professional Development Collection are also included in Academic Search Complete. However, some publications are only found in this database.

The Lion and the Unicorn- An e-journal that contains articles and book reviews about children's literature.
Marvels and Tales: Journal of Fairy Tale Studies- An online journal that contains scholarly publications about fairy-tales.
The Horn Book- An online magazine that includes articles and reviews that deal with children's and young adult's literature.
Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA)- An online journal, published bi-monthly, that is dedicated to exposing the social myths about young adults so that they can be better served by their educational system.

Organizations and Associations:
American Association of School Librarians (AASL)- AASL, a branch of the American Library Association, is a resource center for librarians. It contains AASL journals and publications and other professional tools for librarians.
Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC)- This site is a great tool for librarians. It includes ALSC publications and recommended websites for children
Children's Literature Assembly (CLA)- CLA is a division of the National Council of Teachers of English that advocates the teaching of literature. It includes a list of notable books for children.
Children's Literature Association (ChLA)- A useful resource for students who are aspiring teachers, this association is dedicated to the study and research of children's literature. It includes a discussion group and numerous links to web sites dealing with children's literature.
National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance (NCBLA)- This web site was created by prestigious authors and illustrators of children's books in an attempt to educate the public about the importance of practical literacy and education. The goal of this organization is to bring issues of children's literacy into the national agenda.
Educator Resources:
10 Quick Ways to Analyze Children's Books for Racism and Sexism- The Council on Interracial Books for Children developed this checklist of things to examine when choosing non-racist and non-sexist books for children. It includes tips on what to consider regarding illustrations, storylines, characters and their relationships, and authors.
Carol Hurst's Children's Literature Site- This website offers reviews of books for children and advice on how to incorporate these books into a classroom curriculum. This is a great site for teachers.
Children's Book Council (CBC)- The CBC is a great resource for teachers, parents, and librarians. It includes reading lists, job opportunities, reading lists for children and youth, and an online store.
Children's Literature Navigator- This site contains nearly 1,000 links of internet sources regarding children's literature for teachers, parents, and librarians. These links include information about authors, illustrators, characters, literacy, and much more.
Children's Literature Web Guide- A collection of internet resources concerning literature for children and youth. It offers author information, resources for teachers, parents, storytellers, and writers, and internet discussion groups.
De Grummond Children's Literature Collection- Located in the McCain Library at the University of Southern Mississippi, this is one of the foremost children's literature research centers in the nation. This collection includes original manuscripts and illustrations for more than 1,200 authors and illustrators, and over 100,000 published works dating from 1530 to the present.
ISLMC Children's Literature & Language Arts Resources- Hosted by the Internet School Library Media Center of James Madison University, this web site provides information about children's literature, including authors, book reviews, and book awards.
Kay E. Vandergrift's Special Interest Page- This site is dedicated to the study of children's literature from various cultural and critical viewpoints. This site contains a history of children's literature, author sites, and information about gender and feminist studies.
Resources for Aspiring Authors/Illustrators:
Rutgers University Council on Children's Literature- An organization of authors, illustrators, agents, publishers, and educators who seek to assist new authors and illustrators of children's books, and to raise awareness of the importance of literacy. This site contains links to various resources for aspiring authors and/or illustrators of children's literature
Small Presses Owned and Operated by People of Color: Publishers of Children's Books- This site, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a compilation of contact information for publishers of multicultural literature.
Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWL)- This web site is a great resource for writers and/or illustrators of children's books. It contains information on writer's conferences, writing tips, and discussion boards.
Interactive Web Sites:
Andersen Fairy Tales- An interactive web site that brings fairy tales to life. These online fairy tales are equipped with moving pictures to capture the imaginations of children. This site also includes interactive games and biographical information about Hans Christian Andersen.
The Bookhive- this site lists and briefly describes modern children's books. Also provided are book reviews by various librarians, and special tips for parents regarding each book. This site also contains activities for children. They can listen to a storyteller, take a Harry Potter quiz, or color a picture from a popular children's book
Children's Storybooks Online- An online collection of illustrated storybooks for children. In addition to reading, kids can enjoy mind-boggling puzzles and riddles related to the storybooks.
Grimm Fairy Tales- This site is dedicated to the twisted tales of The Brothers Grimm. It is an interactive site where children can read fairytales that come complete with moving pictures. Also included is a biography of The Brothers Grimm.
International Children's Digital Library- A free online library of children's books in over 100 languages. This web site was designed by the University of Maryland.
Once Upon a Time…A Children's Literature Web Site- This web site is hosted by Ball State University and provides a horde of information concerning children's literature. Information about authors and illustrators, various genres, book awards, and censorship can be found here.
Seussville- This web site is dedicated to the wonderful works of Dr. Seuss. This is an interactive site where kids can play games related to Dr. Seuss stories. Of special interest is the "Seussville Story Maker" feature in which children can create a story of their own. Also included is an author biography.
Sur LaLune Fairy Tales- A collection of fairy tales and their illustrations available to read and view online. It contains 44 annotated fairytales and 1,300 illustrations.
