Most databases index articles from journals, newspapers, and magazines. Some databases offer full text articles, while others contain only citations. Some databases are subject specific, while others are more general in coverage. Some databases relevant to the biological sciences are:

The Reference Collection, located on the second floor of the GCSU Library, is often the best place to start your research. To search for government information for any topic, use the Catalog of Government Publications from the Government Printing Office. You may also want to try searching the catalog for the National Technical Information Service. For a general search of government information try the site USA.gov. Finally, Google offers a government information search at this site.

You can find directories of links to scientific information at several sites including Environment, Energy, and Agriculture [USA.gov], Environment & Environmental Quality resources. [science.gov], and Environmental Health and Toxicology [National Library of Medicine].

The National Library of Medicinealso provides access to TOXMAP: Environmental Health E-maps and TOXNET - Toxicology Data Network.

The Environmental Protection Agency website is a great place to start. You may want to check the Where you live page for information on the environment in your local area. The ECOTOX Database allows you to search for toxicology information by organism or chemical names. Other agencies that may provide information include the Department of the Interior, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Congress, the U.S. Geological Survey, and NASA.

The Science Accelerator allows you to seach scientific literature and reports in ten different databases. It is provided by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information at the Department of Energy.
