Indexes and abstracts available in print or in electronic format allow subject access to articles in scholarly journals, magazines, and newspapers. Consult the reference librarian for advice on choosing indexes and abstracts most appropriate to your topic.

  • Women Studies Abstracts, a quarterly publication which abstracts articles and indexes other material in some 35 journals specific to women's studies and feminism, is available from 1972-present. This resource is housed in the West Wing, West Wall on top of the wall-mounted shelves on the right as you face Clarke Street.

African American Women Writers of the 19th century
  • A unique collection of diverse literature (essays, fiction, journals, etc.). It also provides a search tool to allow searches by author, title, and genre.

  • Homepage for the non-profit organization which provides access to information and services concerning sexual activity, reproduction and family planning. Good source for statistics relating to these issues worldwide.
American Women's History
  • Web guide for beginning researchers that covers around 30 subject areas of US women's history, such as African Americans, Native Americans, Jewish women, historic periods, sexuality, women's rights, and women scientists.
Artemis Guide to Women's Studies Programs
  • Site linking to women's studies programs in the United States with web sites.

Breast Cancer Information Center

  • Information about breast cancer from articles, fact sheets, etc., plus links to other on-line information resources on breast cancer. Hosted by the Feminist Majority.
British Women Romantic Poets 1789-1832
  • Scholarly archive of e-text editions of poetry by British and Irish women written (not necessarily published) between 1789 (the onset of the French Revolution) and 1832 (the passage of the Reform Act). Unversity of California at Davis project. Texts are drawn from UC--Davis Library's Kohler Collection of British Poetry, housed in the Department of Special Collections.

Center for the American Woman and Politics
  • Database of current and past women office holders and candidates with demographic and political information on officeholders. Includes an examination of trends and movements in politics, a newsletter, fact sheets, and a directory of Women's PACs and Donor Networks.
Diotima: Materials for the Study of Women and Gender in the Ancient World
  • Links to course materials, a searchable bibliography, online articles, book reviews, databases, and images. Hosted by the University of Kentucky.
Documents from the women's liberation movement: an on-line archival collection
  • Digital collection of materials drawn from radical organizations of the women's movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s, held in Duke University's special collections.
Emancipation of Women 1860-1920
  • Archive of biographical information, excerpts from primary resources, and images detailing the women's suffrage movement in Britain. Developed by Spartacus International, a teacher's cooperative that publishes low-cost educational materials.
Feminist Theory Website
  • Brief introductions and bibliographies on topics relating to feminist theory, such as Post-Colonialism, Psychology, Body Studies, etc. Sections are written by scholars and specialists from around the world and the site is available in English, French and Spanish.

Guide to Uncovering Women's History in Archival Collections

  • Provides links to women's studies archives by geographic location with brief annotations about the holdings of each archive listed.
Matrix
  • An ongoing project to collect and make available all existing data about all professional Christian women in Europe between 500 and 1500 C.E. Both textual and material sources, primary and secondary, are included although the database is primarily comprised of unpublished archival evidence.
Medieval Feminist Index:
  • Bibliography on women, sexuality, and gender (including  masculinity and male homosexuality) during the Middle Ages. Indexes more than 300 journals as well as many essay collections. A work in progress, all years of coverage (1994) are still incomplete.
National Museum of Women in the Arts
  • Includes an online tour with the museum's founder, an extensive table of contents, links to high-quality illustrations of artworks plus essays about selected artists. In addition, the site allows the viewer access to resources in the museum's impressive library and research center including special collections, reference materials, and bibliographies.
National NOW Times
  • Text of the newsletter from 1995 to current. Keyword searchable.

ViVa: a bibliography of women's history in historical and women's studies journals

  • Index to women's and gender history articles in over 100 scholarly journals in history and women's studies published 1975 to the present. Database presently cites over 5,500 articles in Dutch, English, French, and German.
Voices From the Gap: Women Writers of Color
  • Educational site listing a growing number of women writers with brief biographical information, links to other sites, bibliography of important materials on the writer, and a list of works by the author. Many entries have been contributed by undergraduate and graduate students rather than by scholars in the field, but for basic introductions this site is a nice starting place. Hosted by the University of Minnesota.
Women and Gender Studies Web Sites
  • Links to women's studies resources by subjects. Look under such headings as archives, art and film, education, culture, health, history, philosophy, science and technology, etc. Developed by the Women's Studies Section Collection Development Committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries.
Women in America, 1820 to 1842
  • Travelogues of eighteen travelers of Irish, German, Scotch, English, and French origin. Selected by Mary Halnon to form a more complete and varied picture of the life of American women during this time than can be found in Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America. Writings are organized both by date and by topic.
Women in Politics
  • Bibliographic database currently indexing hundreds of titles of recent works concerned with women in politics. Provides bibliographic references to books, reports and journal articles on all aspects of women's participation in political life worldwide.
Women Romantic Era Writers
  • Created by Adriana Craciun (Univ. of Nottingham), this site includes a variety of US, British, Canadian, and European links to texts and Web sites devoted to individual writers and issues. Craciun divides the resources into six sections: Electronic Texts by Women Writers; Annuals, Anthologies and Gift Books; Contemporary Responses to Women Writers; Electronic Text Archives; Cultural and Visual Resources; and Related Web Sites.
