An Introduction to Operator Theory Dr. Amy Kelley, Georgia College Mathematics Department

Abstract

This talk will be a *brief* introduction to linear operator theory and some of its applications. Linear operator theory can be thought of as a generalization of linear algebra. This talk will explore some generalizations of the notions in linear algebra, such as finite dimensional Euclidean space and linear maps. We'll also discuss why you'd ever want to consider such things, other than for the sheer joy of it. In other words we'll at least say what kind of problems can be approached with operator theory, even though we won't actually *do* any applications. The talk should be accessible to students.
