Modern Languages and Cultures Resources

Language Laboratory
The Language Laboratory is located in 271 & 273 Arts & Sciences, and is managed by the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. This state of the art facility is divided into two separate spaces: Room 271 is a 30 seat facility with computers at each position equipped with Sanako Study 1200 software, and room 273 is a tutoring area where students receive language assistance by the student staff.

Sanako Study 1200 is modular software that allows instructors to install modules that include additional teaching and learning assignments. Students are able to enjoy voice-based activities such as model imitation, reading practice, and mark-to-speak drills.

The Lab is used primarily as a library system. Students can find an instructor's oral/aural activities and assignments and develop them in a variety of ways at an individual station. The facility also provides students with convenient hours of operation to allow them to come on their own schedule and proceed at their own pace. The lab is also used on a scheduled system in which the instructor brings the class to the lab and monitors the students' learning. The lab is operated by student workers under the direction of the Coordinator of the Language Lab, a member of our faculty. The LL provides a number of services in support of foreign language learning at Georgia College & State University. These services include:

  • Peer tutoring by members of the student staff
  • Videos, CDs and online web pages to accompany the textbooks for the courses we teach in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Arabic, Russian, and Japanese. Students may use audio and video resources in the lab
  • Audio assignments in a variety of languages designed by instructors for students' self-study
  • Computer assisted language learning programs
  • Feature films, documentaries and educational videos in different languages
  • Foreign language reading materials, such as online magazines and newspapers
  • Reference aids: monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, and grammar reviews

Audio and video programs are required, or strongly recommended, for students in the first two to three semesters of language study and are closely coordinated with the texts being used in each course. Lab materials are also used and available for certain courses above these levels. For more information call Dr. Aurora Castillo, Coordinator of the Language Lab, at (478) 445 0950 or you may contact the lab assistants at (478) 445-0961.
