Uniquely Conceived Field-Based Programs
The programs for the initial preparation of teachers are unique in their strong focus on field-based integrative programs. The term field-based refers to the organization of the program and the location of learning experiences in the public schools. In our case, it means that teacher candidates in our music education program spend hours in public school music rooms exclusive of student teaching in the course of two years. They are placed in music classrooms on all levels which include elementary school music programs, middle school music programs and high school music programs. These practica assure that they have experiences in all levels of school music programs to help prepare them for initial certification in music education. In Georgia, initial certification covers all areas of music from Pre-kindergarten through secondary school.
