Dr. Sergio Ruiz
Steinway artist, Dr. Sergio H. Ruiz became the Music Department Chair at Georgia College on August 1, 2013. Dr. Ruiz received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Rice University, the Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Bachelor of Arts degree from Santa Clara University. Prior to his appointment at Georgia College, Dr. Ruiz was the Director of Keyboard Studies at Sam Houston State University for 9 years. During his tenure, he won the Texas Music Teachers Association Collegiate Teacher of the Year and the Faculty Excellence in Service Award at SHSU. He also served as Artistic Director of a Youth Symphony and Music program in León, México. Dr. Ruiz also created and was the Director of a Latin American Arts and Humanities Festival—Festival (de) Inspiración.
Dr. Ruiz has delighted audiences throughout the world. His performances on Spanish-speaking radio broadcasts have aired throughout South and Central America. Most recently, he performed concerts in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and México. Under the auspices of a Wagoner research grant, Dr. Ruiz studied piano in Barcelona, Spain under the tutelage of the great pianist Alicia de Larrocha. Dr. Ruiz has prepared an edition of the piano chamber music of Spanish composer Enrique Granados (1867-1916).
