The Georgia College Wind Symphony is open to all interested instrumental musicians on campus. This group performs a variety of band literature each semester and tours the Southeast in the spring. This is the main instrumental group on campus and its members represent all schools and major areas on campus. Students receive one hour credit per semester for participation.
Orchestra
The GC Orchestra is a string ensemble comprised of GC students (music majors and non-music majors), faculty, and community members. The purpose of the ensemble is to improve skill and to cover a variety of repertoire fostering students' musical development. The ensemble rehearses twice a week and performs several concerts each semester. This course can be used as a required ensemble for music majors who perform on an orchestral string instrument (violin, viola, celli, string bass.) Jazz Band
The Georgia College Jazz Band is an auditioned group. To audition, all instrumentalists must be a performing member of the Georgia College Wind Symphony. The vocalist, bass guitar, and pianists do not have to members of the Wind Symphony. This group performs a variety of music that includes jazz, swing, and blues. The Jazz Band performs at campus concerts, community events, and tours the Southeast each spring. Students receive one hour credit per semester for participation.
Pep Band
The Georgia College Pep Band performs at all home men's and women's basketball games and at the annual Peach Belt NCAA II tournament. Membership in this award-winning group is open to members of the GC Wind Symphony who audition. Each member receives a stipend and one hour credit for participation.
Percussion Ensemble
The Percussion Ensemble is a chamber ensemble of music major and non-majors dedicated to the performance of original and transcribed music for percussion ensemble. The repertoire ranges from the roots of percussion ensemble in the late 1920s (Roldan, Varese, Cage, Harrison, etc.) to contemporary compositions by active composers such as David Skidmore, Brett William Dietz, and Michael Burritt. Percussion Ensemble is open to all university students, but musical experience is required to successfully function as a member of the ensemble. The course meets once a week to be coached by the instructor, but the ensemble is encourgaged to meet as necessary. For more information, contact Dr. Ryan Smith at rmarimba@aol.com.
