Dr. Douglas O'Grady
Assistant Professor of Music in Theory and Composition (2004) and Music Theory Coordinator
Douglas O'Grady is from the southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island areas of New England. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Theory and Composition from the University of Alabama, a Master of Music degree in Theory and Composition from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Theory and Composition from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. He has been teaching at Georgia College & State University since 2004.
Here at GCSU, Dr. O'Grady is the Music Theory Coordinator and teaches Music Theory, Composition, and Music Technology courses. He serves as an iPod Project Leader, and as the College Music Society Campus Representative for GCSU. In addition he serves on the university's Technology Planning Council and the College of Arts and Sciences' Curriculum and Instruction Committee.
As a composer, Dr. O'Grady has had performances of his acoustic and electronic music at concerts and festivals across the country and across the Atlantic including the Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival, the Southeastern Composers' Symposium, the International Tuba Euphonium Conference, the International Women's Brass Conference, and SCI Regional and National Conferences. Recently he won an award for Excellence in Design from The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for his original score to Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice. Other composition awards include the SCI/ASCAP Student Commission Competition, and the Frederic Goossen Award for Composition. He has studied composition with C.P. First, Tristan Murail, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Quincy C. Hilliard, and Charles Fussell.
Dr. O'Grady is a member of the Society for Music Theory (SMT), the College Music Society (CMS), the Society of Composers Inc. (SCI), the National Association of Composers in the United States of America (NACUSA), the International Computer Music Association (ICMA), the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the Percussive Arts Society (PAS).
