"Reconsidering Flannery O'Connor":
An NEH Summer Institute
In her short story “Revelation,” Flannery O’Connor describes a vision of people whose “virtues were being burned away.” During July of 2014, an NEH Summer Institute, “Reconsidering Flannery O’Connor” challenged 21 college and university instructors and three graduate students to “burn away” their preconceptions about O’Connor’s world of misfits, artificals, street preachers, displaced persons and self-satisfied souls.
In the months ahead, this site will not only offer an overview of that Institute but post some of the practical fruits it has born: revised syllabi featuring O’Connor, photos and videos to support teaching and research into O’Connor, and a view of what life during an NEH Summer Institute looks like.
Begin exploring this site by reading the rationale for reconsidering Flannery O'Connor. Then use the links on the left side the page to navigate through the cite and explore its offering. Let our Summer Scholars’ experiences and insights help you to reconsider Flannery O’Connor.
