Overview of the Visiting Scholar Program

Mrs. NewellThe Martha Daniel Newell Visiting Scholar program was established in 2011 with an endowment from Georgia College alumna, Mrs. Martha Daniel Newell. The program is designed to reinforce Georgia College's liberal arts mission by providing a rare and exciting opportunity for the college community to work alongside a nationally recognized scholar-in-residence. Newell Visiting Scholars are a source of intellectual stimulation for students and faculty, and provide an opportunity to bring new perspectives in knowledge and teaching to Georgia College.

For the 2013-14 academic year, proposals are being requested from scholars in the following disciplines – arts, humanities, social sciences and physical sciences – the traditional disciplines of a liberal arts college that are at the heart of our educational mission. The nominee should be a teacher/scholar of distinction who will offer something original and engaging to undergraduate and graduate students and faculty colleagues.
Interested scholars are invited to provide a proposal identifying the goals and initiatives they will bring to the Georgia College campus during their visit. Proposals may be for varying lengths of time ranging from one semester to the majority of an academic year.

The Newell Visiting Distinguished Scholar receives a stipend and office space on campus. The ideal candidate might be a scholar on sabbatical, retired, or on leave for purposes of intellectual renewal.  While visits may vary in length, the expectation is that the scholar will be in-residence for a substantial portion of the proposed visit.
