State of Georgia Hope Scholarship and the Zell Miller Scholarship

Changes to the Hope Scholarship and the Zell Miller Scholarship effective fall 2011 may be accessed at http://www.gcsu.edu/financialaid/docs/HOPE_Updated_Information6.pdf. (pdf)

Academic Common Market

Graduate and undergraduate programs in outdoor education are listed on the Southern Regional Education Board website.  Students from Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia may be eligible for in-state tuition rates based on the lack of availability of a B.S. in outdoor education or an M.Ed. in Outdoor Education Administration in the home state.

If you are interested in one of our programs it must be accepted in the state in which you are considered a resident.  Potential applicants should request our program be added to the Southern Region Education Board Website by contacting the State Coordinator.  An institution may list the program, but until it has been accepted for the residents of a specific state, it is not visible. It would not be fair to list programs that students were not eligible for.

For additional information, including State Coordinator contact information, visit  Southern Regional Education Board website

Scholarships

Each year, students currently enrolled at Georgia College who plan to return the following academic year have the opportunity to apply for Scholarships for Returning Students. Note that these scholarships are not available to incoming freshmen or transfer students. The Georgia College Financial Aid Office maintains an on-line application for all institutional scholarships which is accessed via the student's myCATS account.  The scholarship application is typically available late Fall Semester for the upcoming academic year with most deadlines being the first Friday of February.  The Financial Aid Office notifies all enrolled students by e-mail when the application is available.

Outside scholarships may be accessed through searching data bases related to the discipline.  Students are encouraged to investigate options beyond Georgia College as appropriate to their career goals and the wide range of disciplines to which outdoor education is related.  Some helpful scholarship and grant links include (remember "buyer beware" so read terms and conditions carefully):

Loans

Information about loan applications and eligibility can be found on the Financing Your Education page.

Graduate Assistantships

The graduate program in outdoor education administration has a strong history of successfully placing interested incoming students in graduate assistantships. Most students in graduate assistantship positions receive an in-state or out-of state tuition waiver (provided they maintain a full graduate course load) and a modest stipend. Graduate assistantships may be renewable for up to four semesters.

Students interested in applying for graduate assistantships must be approved for regular admission according to the criteria set forth by Graduate Admissions and the outdoor education program.   Students admitted conditionally are not normally eligible  for a graduate assistantship in the first semester of study and there is not guarantee that a graduate assistantship will be available in the second semester.

The graduate assistantship application form is available here.   University policy indicates that graduate students be placed in graduate assistantships  that are pertinent to the field of graduate studies. Outdoor education administration students may be eligible for graduate assistantships in the Department of Education, as well as other departments such as Academic Outreach, Academic Engagement, Instructional Technology, or the Leadership Certificate program based on their undergraduate major or prior experience.

Coordinator of Graduate Studies in outdoor education normally advises potential students about the availability of graduate assistantships during the interview process.  For information about graduate assistantships in the Department of Outdoor Education and application procedures see the Graduate Student Handbook.
