Founded in 1889, Georgia College enrolls approximately 6,700 undergraduate and graduate students on a beautiful and historic main campus in Milledgeville, the pre-Civil War capital of Georgia. Designated by the University System as Georgia's public liberal arts university, Georgia College offers students a challenging array of undergraduate degree programs and graduate-level programs in four colleges: arts and sciences, business, education and health sciences.
Average SAT scores of entering freshmen rank third among Georgia’s public universities, behind only Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia. Georgia College consistently is recognized as one of the nation’s best public universities by U.S. News & World Report, which most recently cited its “Strong Commitment to Teaching,” and Kiplinger’s, and is the only public university in Georgia designated a “College of Distinction.”

A member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), Georgia College is known for combining the educational experiences typical of esteemed private liberal arts colleges with the affordability and resources of a public university. The main campus is a residential learning community that emphasizes undergraduate education and offers a select number of graduate programs. GC faculty and staff are dedicated to engaging students in the learning process through high impact pedagogies and fostering excellence in the classroom and beyond through internships, study abroad, and experiential and service learning.
Georgia College seeks to endow its graduates with a passion for achievement, intellectual curiosity, and an exuberance for learning and critical thinking. Our values include an emphasis on acting from a foundation of respect for self and others, fostering responsible leaders and global citizens, and cultivating relationships that enhance collaborative approaches to solving problems.
Georgia College offers nearly 40 undergraduate majors and more than 30 graduate programs, including those offered in nearby Macon and Warner Robins.
Hiring preference will be given to faculty and administrators who demonstrate an understanding of Georgia College's mission and who are enthusiastic about working closely with high-achieving students within an academic community dedicated to the advancement of knowledge through learning and scholarship.
While GC faculty are committed to community service and are creatively engaged in their fields of specialization, they focus their attention primarily on maintaining excellence in instruction and guiding students. Students are endowed with both information and values through small classes, interdisciplinary studies, close association with the faculty and staff in and beyond the classroom, lively involvement in cultural life, and service to the community. In turn, Georgia College seeks to provide communities and employers with graduates who exhibit professionalism, responsibility, service, leadership and integrity.

The campus occupies 43 acres within the City of Milledgeville, with facilities for athletics, recreation and outdoor education located nearby on an additional 600 acres. With its blend of majestic red brick buildings and white Corinthian columns, the campus appeals to those seeking a classic academic environment in which to pursue a comprehensive program of higher education. The university’s campus also features the recently restored Old Governor's Mansion, a national historic landmark that serves as an educational center and museum. A state-of-the-art Wellness and Recreation Center opens in Fall 2011 on the university’s West Campus.

A wide variety of extra-curricular pursuits engage students outside the classroom, including concerts, plays, fine arts exhibitions, honor societies, debates, student media, social fraternities and sororities, as well as other clubs and organizations. Each year, students from Georgia College expand their learning and leadership through their extraordinary level of community service, providing thousands of hours of assistance to organizations and non-profit groups. Georgia College has been recognized on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the past two years.
The university also offers an extensive array of sports, competing in NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, golf and cross-country and winning the Commissioner’s Cup for the past two years.
The university is nationally known to many for its most famous alumna, author Flannery O'Connor, and is the repository for many of her manuscripts. It also holds the Peace Corps and other papers of the late U.S. Sen. Paul Coverdell. In recent years, the campus has established a Natural History Museum, Planetarium and a Museum of Fine Arts as well as a “black box” theatre in a former downtown movie theatre.
The university was founded by the State of Georgia in 1889 as a women's college. In 1967, it became a regional, co-educational college. In 1996, the college assumed its current name and was designated as Georgia's Public Liberal Arts University. Today, Georgia College alumni can be found in top leadership positions in the fields of education, the arts, health services, public administration, and at prominent companies nationwide such as GEICO, Georgia Power, YKK Corporation and the Women’s Entertainment Television Network.
