October 2008 News

Welcome to the second issue of the Information Technology newsletter. In response to feedback from you, we have made some changes. The Microsoft Office productivity tip has been revised to include Apple users and the IT staff member section has been renamed to better state the purpose of that section.  Please continue to send me your comments and suggestions on ways to improve this newsletter.

Sincerely,

Donald L. Steward
Executive Director of Information Technology and CIO

Welcome our new IT staff member

Scott Williams is our new Systems Administrator and will be working on Microsoft Windows based servers.  He is a graduate of GCSU and previously worked for IT at the Serve Help Desk. Please join us in welcoming Scott to our university community.

Tactical Response to the Strategic Technology Plan

Edgardo Delgado will be developing a database of instructional technology equipment.  He will be conducting an audit of equipment currently available in the classroom.   This information will be used to update the S25/R25 Room Reservation System to accurately reflect available technology in each instructional space.  We feel this will provide a starting point for the development of a technology improvement plan for instructional spaces, as part of the IT Tactical Response to Strategic Technology Plan Goal # 1.

Updates on the annual work plan

Basic Projection Systems
Working with the deans, we are implementing a plan for the nineteen basic projection systems purchased with end of year funds.   This will provide a dedicated Dell or Apple at the instructor's station with the ability to connect a laptop, ceiling mounted LCD projector and sound system with four speakers.  An Extron push button switching unit will allow the user to select the instructor's station, a laptop or two other devices along with controlling the sound level in the room. This system has been installed in the following rooms in the Arts & Sciences building: 140, 150, 167, 236, 238, 239, 243 and 274.

Renovated Language Lab

As part of the replacement plan implemented by the student technology fee advisory committee, IT installed Dell PCs for the new Language Lab. The Apple computers taken from A&S 271 were used to upgrade the Art department computer lab in Mayfair.

Getting to know the people behind IT

Delgado image
This month IT highlights Edgardo Delgado. He joined our staff in July and has already begun improving the multimedia in the classrooms.  As part of the ongoing upgrades, he will be all over campus working on audio-visual classroom issues, installing new projection systems, as well as the audit of instructional spaces mentioned earlier in the newsletter.
