Annual Giving Phonathon FAQ & Helpful Tips

Why does Phonathon exist?

Georgia College & State University wants to stay connected with our alumni by: (1) ensuring that we have the most up-to-date contact information in our files for each alumnus; and (2) keeping alumni informed about all of the exciting events and changes being made to and at Georgia College. Phonathon is also used to raise financial resources for the Heritage fund in order to support the advancement of Georgia College. Donations to the Heritage Fund directly support student programs and activities, and provide vital support to student resources across campus.

Who am I speaking to during my Phonathon call?

At Phonathon, we employ over 20 current Georgia College students to work as GC Phonathon Ambassadors. These Bobcats come from all over the state and country; they are also involved with many student organizations and majors from each classification.

How long will my phone call last?

Most calls last about 5 minutes on average, but it can vary depending on your availability. Our callers really enjoy hearing stories about your time here at Georgia College, and sharing their current experiences with you. Many students are also interested in hearing about alumni’s education and career choices. If you do have some time restraints, please let our callers know, and we will respect your availability.

When should I expect a call?

The GC Phonathon calling center operates Monday through Thursday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Why am I called so often?

The system platform that we use at the Bobcat Phonathon calling center is set up with an automated dialer. Each time we fail to reach you, or are unable to complete the call if you are unavailable at the moment, your phone number is recycled in the system and you will receive another call within the next few days. To complete your call, we ask that you take about 5 minutes of your time to speak to one of our callers.

When I answered my phone, nobody was on the line. What happened?

Our calling software is set for a certain number of rings before moving on to the next call. So, if you pick up and nobody is on the line, we probably just missed you. We apologize for this inconvenience and will get back to you in a few days.

Why is Annual Giving so important?

Your annual gifts directly impact today’s students, as well as future generations of Bobcats. Ongoing annual gifts provide flexible support that allows investment in strategic priorities throughout the year. Gifts from alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff and students strengthen our ability to serve students with scholarships, programming, curriculum enhancements, study abroad experiences, technology updates, and more.

I am unable to give to Georgia College this year. How can I avoid being called?

We certainly understand – and respect – that times and circumstances can lead to challenges for making a donation. Any gift – in any amount – is truly appreciated, and every dollar can and will make a difference. Consider making a gift in the amount normally spent for coffee or a pizza, or perhaps you can make a donation in an amount indicative of your class year (e.g. Class of 1982 - $19.82). Our callers will help make the giving process easy for you, and we have many payment levels, methods and schedules to fit your comfort level. Whatever the amount, show your Bobcat Pride by supporting the Heritage Fund. We are primarily interested in your participation and are appreciative of your support.

If you are truly unable to give, please allow our GC Phonathon Ambassadors to update your contact information so that we may avoid sending Georgia College publications to an incorrect address or email; then let the caller know that you won't be able to make a gift this year.

Helpful Tips:

  • Please consider giving by credit/debit card, or by filling out the pledge card that is sent to you upon your request. These payment methods are extremely helpful since we can fund campus priorities right away, and it will assist us in our efforts to “Go Green.” Using any of our payment options over the phone also eliminates the need for you to send a check or follow-up with additional correspondence. We can even set up a payment schedule if there is a concern about paying the gift in full at the time of our call. Finally, at your request, we can schedule a future processing date on whatever date you request.
  • To receive credit for your gift in the university’s current fiscal year, please be sure to submit your gifts to our office by June 30.
  • To remove your name from our calling software, you may make your gift online by visiting our giving website.
