MASTER OF EDUCATION IN KINESIOLOGY (M.ED.) with specialization in Health Promotion, Human Performance or Outdoor Education Administration

The Department of Kinesiology offers the Master of Education in Kinesiology with specializations in Health Promotion, Human Performance and Outdoor Education Administration. The common core (15 h) is a sequenced curriculum for all students in the M.Ed. in Kinesiology and provides opportunities for scholarly investigation in professionally relevant areas and a capstone experience that provides application of administrative topics across specializations. A thesis option or non-thesis provides a more in-depth research experience.

Candidates for the Master of Education in Kinesiology may pursue degree programs while remaining in a professional employment position. Once finished with the program, graduates utilize their newly acquired knowledge and skills to improve job performance and to improve the quality of services to clients. Candidates may also pursue advanced study following an undergraduate program or choose to leave a job to engage in a full-time study at GCSU. These individuals are often looking to make a career change or to seek a new position to commensurate with a Master's degree. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Georgia College & State University: Students seeking admission to the M.Ed. in Kinesiology will submit a completed application form available on line, forward official undergraduate transcripts, GRE scores to Georgia College & State University, Graduate Admissions Office, CBX 107, Milledgeville, GA 31061.

College of Health Sciences: Have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for the upper division major in undergraduate study and successfully complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Department of Kinesiology: Professional graduate programs in the Department of Kinesiology are committed to excellence. In order to serve our professions and our students, we ask that students submit the following documents directly to the Graduate Admissions Office:

1. letter of application describing career goals and how pursuing a career in health promotion, outdoor education administration, or human performance will enhance these goals;
2. current resume;
3. copies of relevant, current training certificates, or certification cards (outdoor education administration);
4. two letters of reference;
5. participate in an interview (outdoor education administration).

REGULAR ADMISSION

GRE score (verbal + quantitative) + [GPA (upper division major coursework) X 100] = 1200 or more

PROVISIONAL ADMISSION

Students will be eligible for provisional admission in the following circumstances:

GRE score (verbal + quantitative) + [GPA (upper division major coursework) X 100] = 1100 to 1199

Students who earn provisional admission status must complete 9-12 hours of graduate coursework at Georgia College & State University with a 3.0 GPA to be considered for regular admission. The 9-12 hours must be earned in courses approved by the Director of Graduate and Professional Programs in Health Sciences and must include KINS 6803 – Research Methods in Kinesiology I.

CONDITIONAL ADMISSION

Applicants who apply too late for full consideration for admission and/or have not submitted all required documents for evaluation may be assigned conditional admission status for one semester only with permission of the Graduate Coordinator. However, this option is discouraged because students failing to submit all required documents or not meeting admission requirements will be required to withdraw from the University. After one semester of conditional, students must have achieved either provisional or regular admission.

TIME LIMITATIONS FOR M.ED DEGREE IN KINESIOLOGY

The requirements for the degree program must be completed within a period of 6 years from the date that the student begins taking courses at GCSU. Courses completed more than 6 years prior to completion of the requirements for the Master's degree will be regarded as outdated and will not be applied toward the degree program. This includes courses that may be transferred from other institutions. Outdated courses may be updated through appropriate means at the discretion of the department.

TRANSFER CREDITS

9 semester hours of graduate coursework with grades of B or better may be accepted from other institutions at the discretion of the department.

STEPS IN COMPLETING THE MASTER OF EDUCATION IN KINESIOLOGY

1. Complete courses with 3.0 GPA.
2. Complete degree program notes as listed in the catalog.
3. Complete the comprehensive exit examination or requirements for the thesis option in the final semester of graduate study.
4. Submit a written application for graduation by the date specified in the official University Academic Calendar.

COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION

All students must pass a comprehensive exit examination or requirements for the thesis option to complete the program of study. Comprehensive examination requirements differ across specialization areas. The examination is scheduled through the GCSU Testing Office or the Department. Students who are unsuccessful on the first attempt may repeat the examination once.
