1.

PHIL 2200 Introduction to Philosophy (unless already completed in Area C) (0-3 hours)

2.

PHIL 2250 Logic and Critical Thinking (3 hours)

3.

Foreign Language (0-9 hours): must show competence at the level of the fourth university course (FREN, GRMN, JAPN or SPAN 2002 Intermediate Readings)

4.

3-15 hours: any 1000-2000 level course in ARTS, ECON, HIST, IDST, MUSC, POLS, PSYC, RHET, SOCI, or THEA

Notes: A course taken to satisfy an Area F requirement may not also be counted to satisfy a Major Requirement. Any transfer student who has not completed the courses in Area F, or their equivalents, must take these courses at GCSU.

Major Requirements

24 semester hours

1.

9 hours chosen from three of the five areas below:

Ethics (PHIL 4410 Ethical Theory, or a PHIL special topics course in this area). (0-3 hours)

Metaphysics (PHIL 4320 Epistemology, or PHIL 4330 Metaphysics, or a PHIL special topics course in area). (0-3 hours)

Social and Political Philosophy (PHIL 4340 Social and Political Philosophy, or a PHIL special topics course in this area). (0-3 hours)

History of Philosophy (a PHIL course in this area to be chosen with advisor approval). (0-3 hours)

Philosophy of Art (a PHIL course in this area to be chosen with advisor approval). (0-3 hours)

2.

Successful completion of a senior capstone experience. PHIL majors can choose, with advisor approval, either PHIL 4920 (Senior Seminar) or PHIL 4970 (Senior Thesis). (3 hours)

3.

Major electives (12 hours): Additional courses in Philosophy (PHIL) at the 3000-4000 level not counted in another major area.

One 3-hour course from a related discipline may be counted as a major elective, with the approval of the department chair and advisor.

Degree Requirements

0-12 semester hours

Students must show competence in a foreign language at the level of the fourth university course (2002). (0-12 hours)

Other Requirements

 

1.

A grade of C or better must be earned in each course that counts toward major requirements and in the senior capstone.

2.

A minimum of 39 hours overall must be at the 3000-4000 level.

3.

The first-year academic seminar must be completed with a satisfactory grade. Students who transfer to GCSU are exempt from this requirement.
