Area F

18 semester hours

Section 1 Area F Requirements (6 hours)

To declare a Psychology Major, students must (a) obtain a combined GPA of 2.5 in PSYC 2700 and 2800, (b) complete the “Application to become a Psychology major”, (c) complete on-line PASS (Psychology Academic Success Skills) (see the Department of Psychological Science) and (d) complete these courses before reaching 90 institutional credit hours. Transfer students must declare Psychology as a major prior to reaching 30 institutional credit hours.

Section 2 Area F Requirements (6 hours)

Foreign Language (3 hours): Must show competence at the 1002 level of a university course.

Other Major Requirements

  1. A grade of C or better must be earned in all PSYC and Area F courses counted toward the major.
  2. PSYC 1101, PSYC 2700, and PSYC 2800 are prerequisites to all PSYC 3000 level courses and PSYC 1101 and junior class status are prerequisite to all 4000 level courses; psychology majors must earn a grade of C or better in MATH 2600.
  3. To declare a Psychology Major, students must (a) obtain a combined GPA of 2.5 in PSYC 2700 and PSYC 2800, (b) complete the “Application to become a Psychology Major”, (c) complete on line PASS (Psychology Academic Success Skills) course with a satisfactory grade of 90% and (d) complete these courses before reaching 90 institutional credit hours. Transfer students must declare psychology as a major prior to reaching 30 institutional credit hours.
  4. Unless otherwise noted, courses may not be repeated for additional academic credit. Courses may be repeated to raise a grade, but the hours credited will only count once toward total hours earned.
  5. Students must take the Senior Exit Exam during the semester in which they graduate and pass it with a scaled score of 135 or higher. Students who do not earn at least a 135 on this exam must obtain a grade of C or higher in PSYC 4940 Senior Exit Exam Seminar.
  6. Students must successfully complete one of the Capstone options during their senior year. Students cannot use additional Capstone courses toward their Major Requirements.
  7. The pre-psychology major is the equivalent of an undeclared major with an emphasis in psychology coursework. In order to graduate with a Psychology major, students must apply and be accepted into the program. It is recommended that you apply before your junior year.

Additional Requirements

  • A minimum of 39 hours overall (i.e., not necessarily in the major) must be at the 3000-4000 level.
  • Electives must total at least 21 hours, not to exceed 30 hours.
