Transformative Experience and Saladin Scholars awards

For many years, the John E. Sallstrom Honors College has supported and promoted the high-impact practice of faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative endeavors by encouraging students to use honors options as a way to do research and to prepare research presentations, by informing students of research conference opportunities such as the Georgia Collegiate Honors Council and the Georgia College Undergraduate Research Conference, by offering research conference grants to honors students who are invited to present their research at academic conferences, and by inviting students to present their research and creative work to other honors students on campus. Those conference grants have been made possible, in part, by a generous gift from Dr. Lynne S. Wilcox. For a list of participants and projects, please click on the accordion links below, which are organized by academic year.

Thanks to a generous gift from Dr. Kenneth Saladin, the longstanding research conference grant program is now part a larger Transformative Experience Grant/Scholarship program, which the John E. Sallstrom Honors College launched in spring 2021. Georgia College Honors students who have maintained an institutional GPA of 3.3 or higher may apply for funds up to a cumulative total of $500 in a given academic year to support undergraduate research, internships, community-based learning, and/or study abroad. Applications are considering on a rolling basis for projects undertaken during the academic year  in which the application is submitted.

Additionally, thanks again to Dr. Saladin’s gift, the John E. Sallstrom Honors College launched a new Saladin Scholarship program in spring 2021. Georgia College Honors students who will have completed 12 credit hours of Honors coursework by the time the proposed program is undertaken, and who have maintained an institutional GPA of 3.3 or higher, may apply for a Saladin Scholarship (up to $2000) to support undergraduate research, internships, community-based learning, and/or study abroad undertaken to serve as a springboard for application to graduate school and/or a national scholarships program. The next Saladin Scholarship recipients will be selected in spring 2024 for projects to be undertaken during summer 2024 or the 2024-2025 academic year. The application deadline is Feb. 15.
